AN IMPROVED PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF IRIDIUM (IV) BROMIDE FROM IRIDIUM (III) CHLORIDE USEFUL FOR IRIDIUM PLATING

Inventors and Abstract

Inventors - Maurice BrookhartAlan, Gokulan Sheela ,CarsonZheng Huang ,Sabuj Kumar Kundu

Abstract - The present invention relates to an improved process for the preparation of iridium (IV) bromide useful for iridium plating. The process steps comprises heating iridium in the presence of an oxidizing agent such as herein described to red hot, cooling the resultant to 30°C and dissolved in distilled water, allowing the said solution to stand for 10-30 hours, reacting the resultant solution with potassium hydroxide at boiling temperature till a blue precipitate is formed, filtering the precipitate and heating it at 50-90°C with l-10ml of bromine and 10-150 ml of hydrobromic acid for 2-8 hours at a pH of 0.5 to 2.5 to get iridium (IV) bromide electrolyte.

Iridium

What is iridium found in

Iridium is the most corrosion-resistant material known. It is used in special alloys and forms an alloy with osmium, which is used for pen tips and compass bearings. It was used in making the standard metre bar, which is an alloy of 90% platinum and 10% iridium.

Where is Iridium most commonly found

Ore containing iridium is found in Brazil, the United States, Myanmar, South Africa, Russia and Australia. Pure iridium is so rare on the Earth's crust that there is only about 2 parts per billion located in the crust, according to Chemistry Explained.

Why is Iridium expensive

Because of its hardness, iridium is difficult to fabricate into usable parts, but the same characteristics that make it difficult to work with also make it a valuable additive for strengthening alloys

Material Information

Iridium Info

Iridium is a rare, precious metal which is hard, brittle and has a low ductility, which makes it a difficult material to work. In appearance, it is a lustrous, silvery metal. It has an abundance in the earth's crust of approximately 3x10 6 ppm.

Physical properties

It is the only metal to maintain good mechanical properties in air at temperatures above 1,600 °C (2,910 °F).[9] It has the 10th highest boiling point among all elements and becomes a superconductor at temperatures below 0.14 K.[10]

Chemical properties

Iridium is the most corrosion-resistant metal known:[15] it is not attacked by almost any acid, aqua regia, molten metals, or silicates at high temperatures. It can, however, be attacked by some molten salts, such as sodium cyanide and potassium cyanide,[16] as well as oxygen and the halogens (particularly fluorine)[17] at higher temperatures.
